Engineered Wood Products

ITECH Seminar | 6 ECTS | Summer Semester 2025

Prof. Dr. Philippe Grönquist (IWB)

Wood represents one of mankind’s most important materials. Currently, it’s significance is increasing thanks benefits such as its sustainability. This module aims at providing basic knowledge on the physical and me-chanical properties of engineered wood products and their modelling, building on knowledge gained in the separate module “Wood Physics” (held winter semester). Hereby, a focus will be laid on the relationships between structure and resulting mechanical and physical properties. In addition, knowledge will be gained about commonly used engineered wood products in timber engineering and their processing. Finally, some insight in current research in the field of wood technology and timber engineering will be provided. A main learning goal is to establish an awareness of a material-appropriate usage of wood and engineered wood products.

Content:

  • Relevant engineered wood products used in modern timber engi-neering (Solid and glued-solid timber, glued-laminated timber, cross-laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber, oriented strand board, etc.): Production, properties, modelling, standardization and structural design
  • The resource wood
  • Wood processing and machining
  • Strength grading of wood
  • Durability and non-destructive testing
  • Adhesive technology
  • Wood modification and functionalization
  • Group exercise case study object

Prerequisites (recommended):

Knowledge of general basics of engineering sciences (on a B.Sc level) as well as the attendance of the lecture “Wood Physics” in the winter semes-ter are of advantage.

Reading List:

Holzphysik – Physik des Holzes und der Holzwerkstoffe - P. Niemz, W. Sonderegger, Fachbuchverlag Leipzig im Carl Hanser Verlag, 2017.
Further relevant references will be provided during the lectures.
