Wood Physics and Engineered Wood Products

ITECH Seminar | 3 ECTS | Winter Semester 2022/23

Prof. Dr. Philippe Grönquist (IWB)

Wood represents one of mankind’s most important materials. Currently, it’s significance is increasing thanks benefits such as its sustainability. This two-semester module aims at providing basic knowledge on the physical properties of wood and engineered wood products. Hereby, a focus will be laid on the relationships between wood structure and resulting mechanical and physical properties. In addition, knowledge will be gained about commonly used wood species and engineered wood products in timber engineering in Europe. Finally, some insight in current research in the field of wood science and technology will be provided. A main learning goal is to establish an awareness of a material-appropriate usage of wood.

Covered topics will include: The resource wood, wood structure and function, wood biology, wood chemistry, wood-water interaction, physical properties (density, thermal-, electrical-, acoustical-, and optical properties of wood), mechanical properties (anisotropy, elasticity, strength, scale-dependency, long-term behavior, modelling, micro-mechanics), engineered wood products, wood processing and machining, durability and non-destructive testing, wood modification and functionalization.

The module is taught in English. Knowledge of general basics of engineering sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, and mechanics on a B.Sc level) are of advantage.

The seminar is a 2-part seminar for ITECH students (a 3 ECTS seminar in the winter semester, followed by a 3 ECTS seminar in the summer semester) - students need to take both parts to earn ITECH seminar credits.
