German Design Award Special 2023

February 3, 2023

The livMatS Pavilion received a special mention in the category Excellent Architecture – Eco Design during the German Design Award 2023 ceremony last week at Messe Frankfurt.
The German Design Awards are the largest prizes of the @germandesigncouncil and among the most recognized international design awards.

Congratulations to the ITECH Class of 2020 and the ICD/ITKE project team and our project partners at FibR GmbH and the Clusters of Excellence livMatS, University of Freiburg (Prof. Dr. Thomas Speck, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Rühe,) and IntCDC, University of Stuttgart!

The livMatS Pavilion offers a viable, resource-efficient alternative to conventional construction methods and represents an important step towards sustainability in architecture. Enabled by a novel combination of natural materials and advanced digital technologies, it constitutes the first building ever with a load-bearing structure that is entirely made of robotically wound flax fibre, a material that is fully naturally renewable, biodegradable, and regionally available in Central Europe.

The German Design Awards are the largest prizes of the German Design Council and are among the most recognized international design awards. For eleven years now, the German Design Council has been honoring pioneering designers and their work with this coveted prize. Entries are judged by an international jury made up of leading experts from all disciplines of design.
