Curated Deformation: A form driving logic for cellular elastic material systems, curated by actively controlled embedded actuators to change the global double curvature of surface-based systems

The research aims to develop an actively controlled surface-based material system, which consists of elastically deforming components, actuated by integrated pneumatic cushions.

The key strategy to form drive the system is based on the local change of the component’s diameter by inflating the cushion which leads to a contraction and expansion of the cell. The strategically applied edge length differentiation within a bigger aggregation of components creates a drastic shape change from a 2d flat to a 3d doubly curved geometry on the global level. Further the research aims to open a discussion about how computational means allows the designer to rethink the static materialized environment we are used to live within and provides a vision for future more alive-like build systems.
